New App Aims To Make Sleep Apnea Diagnosis Easier

Diagnosing sleep apnea can be a real pain for some. Going to a sleep clinic can be scary and daunting, and the quality of your results can be altered because for some, it can be difficult to even sleep hooked up to all that machinery. Home testing isn’t always much better, but at least you have the home-field advantage. But a new app called Ognomy aims to change all of that.

Ognomy was developed by a team of researchers in Georgia, with the goal of diagnosing sleep apnea quickly and efficiently – from home. Ognomy is available for both Android and Apple smartphone users and works simply. First, you have a consultation with an Ognomy trained sleep doctor, Much of the Ognomy program is done through the app, so you don’t need to go into a sleep clinic, even for your initial evaluation. This is especially comforting for some with social distancing still being so important in today’s society. Once your initial consultation is complete, if the specialist deems you at high risk for having sleep apnea, you will then get a kit mailed to you to conduct your sleep test and analysis.

The Ognomy app then refers you to a local sleep specialist who will help get you on a treatment plan for your sleep apnea. It’s as easy as that.

Sleep apnea, especially obstructive sleep apnea, affects an estimated 18 million Americans. It is a sleep disorder wherein the affected stops and restarts breathing while sleeping, causing them to wake repeatedly. Sleep apnea affects your waking hours, too, causing sleepiness, lethargy, and cognitive impairment. It can even worsen many medical conditions like heart disease and diabetes and can increase your risk of stroke.

If you believe you or a loved one may have sleep apnea, reach out to Dr. Mingus, your physician, sleep clinic, or check out Ognomy and schedule a sleep evaluation. Once you get your results, schedule an appointment to discuss your results with Dr. Mingus. Dr. Mingus uses facial growth to treat sleep apnea, which can make a huge difference in how you sleep and breathe, and can have immense positive results in your waking life, too!
