Crafting Custom TMJ Splints in Bend

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) splints are one of the most effective dental treatments for people suffering from TMJ disorder. It is a customized oral appliance that helps reposition the jaw and alleviate muscle pain around the joint. TMJ splints can interrupt the cycle of pain, allowing the joint to heal and properly align. Available in several types, which one is most appropriate for an individual depends on his or her unique case.

At Kelley Mingus DDS, we offer our patients several types of TMJ splints, including night guards, occlusal splints, rapid maxillary expanders, and bite blockers. From the football enthusiast with a broken TMJ to the middle-aged woman experiencing severe jaw pain, we are dedicated to providing personalized care for each and every unique case. Our certified staff of orthodontic clinicians can evaluate individual needs and help select the best TMJ splint treatment option for every patient.

Types of TMJ splints

Night guards

These are the most common type of splint used for the treatment of TMJ disorder. Basically, they are made of a hard plastic and are large enough to extend over all of the patient’s teeth. When properly fitted, night guards align the upper and lower dental arches and act to protect the teeth from the extreme forces associated with grinding or clenching overnight. Eliminating this pressure can greatly relieve the symptoms of TMJ and help the joint heal and strengthen itself.

Occlusal splints

Occlusal splints are very similar to night guards, however, they are specifically designed to open the bite slightly. Some occlusal splints are slightly bigger than night guards, but have the same uniqueness in appearance. Occlusal splints are mainly used to stabilize the TMJ and help with the ease of movement of the joint. This type of splint is often an effective treatment option for abrasions, fractured teeth, and chronic joint pain.

Rapid maxillary expanders

Rapid maxillary expanders are passive orthodontic appliances that are fastened to the upper dental arch using a set of bands. These splints are used by many orthodontists to help move the teeth into a more naturally aligned position, thus eliminating abnormal forces and preventing TMJ related symptoms over time. While these splints are possible in many adults, most cases involving rapid maxillary expansion are performed on children between the ages of 7 and 18.

Bite blockers

Bite blockers are custom devices made of soft, pliable material which are placed between the arches of teeth to help keep the jaw muscles from trying to position the jaw in such a way that blocks the full articulation of the TMJ. This not only helps alleviate pain, but it also assists with improving the strength and range-of-motion of the jaw joint. Bite blockers are especially useful for people who are looking to avoid having surgery or prosthesis in the long-term.
