Nothing ruins your day like a dental emergency. Whether you’ve suffered an injury to your teeth or mouth, lost a filling, have a toothache, or any other unexpected issue, it’s important to know what to do and how to get help quickly. Here’s what you need to do in case of a dental emergency, and how Dr. Mingus can be there for you and your family when you need care the most.
Common Dental Emergencies and What to Do
There are many different types of dental emergencies that can occur. Here are some of the most common dental emergencies and what you should do if they happen to you:
Toothache
If you have a toothache, it’s important to determine the cause of the pain. You can rinse your mouth with warm water, and then use floss or an interdental cleaner to clean around the tooth to remove any trapped food or debris. Over-the-counter pain relief can help manage the pain, but you should still see a dentist right away to determine the underlying cause.
Cut in mouth or lip
Stop any bleeding by applying pressure with a clean cloth. Rinse the area with warm water, and then apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. If the bleeding doesn’t stop or if you can’t take care of the injury yourself, go to the emergency room for care.
Broken, missing or chipped tooth
A broken, missing, or chipped tooth will need to be addressed as quickly as possible. Begin by saving any broken tooth pieces, and then rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling, and make an appointment with Dr. Mingus as soon as possible. If the tooth is knocked out, place it in a cup of milk to keep it moist and head to the dental office right away.
Lost filling or crown
If you lose a filling or crown, you can apply clove oil or over-the-counter dental gel to the area to help relieve pain and discomfort. If you still have the filling or crown, save it and bring it to the dental office for reattachment.
