As we age, we notice many changes to our bodies. Our skin wrinkles, our hair turns gray, and our gums may recede, forming black triangles between each tooth as they recede. This can not only be a little alarming, but it can also be damaging to our self-esteem. These triangles have a name, too: gingival embrasures. Gingival embrasures themselves aren’t dangerous, however, gum recession can be dangerous, as it exposes more of the enamel that should be protected by our gums. This can cause gum disease, as more harmful bacteria are allowed to enter the gumline.
Gum disease, in turn, can put us at risk for gum and tissue loss, and even lost teeth and jaw bone.
The good news is that gingival embrasures are preventable. This can be done by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once per day. If you are already noticing the appearance of gingival embrasures, don’t panic. There are treatments available that Dr. Mingus can discuss with you, including deep tissue cleaning and gum grafting, to name a few. Often, gums can even be stimulated to grow with a laser procedure called laser gum recontouring. These procedures work to stimulate gum growth, closing up some of the dark gaps of the gingival embrasures.
If you are already noticing gingival embrasures, don’t assume it’s too late to stop them and prevent them from returning, or even regenerate missing gum tissue and close some of those dark triangles up for good.
Speak with Dr. Mingus about the condition of your teeth and gums and see which treatment plan may be right for you. Gingival embrasures do not have to be a way of life for you, and improving them can improve your self-image and self-esteem.
