For some of us, taking vitamins each morning is as routine as that first cup of coffee. Vitamins can help boost our energy, our immune system, and provide gaps in nutrients we may not be getting in our regular diet. There are vitamins for practically everything you can think of – from eye health to vein health to even hair health. When it comes to vitamins, if you can dream it, there’s likely a supplement out there for it. But a new kind of vitamin has recently debuted in the marketplace, and it’s left some wondering if it’s really that important – or effective.
On paper, oral health vitamins seem like a good idea. After all, who doesn’t want healthier teeth and gums? But before you rush out and spend your hard-earned money on these new supplements, let’s take a look at why they may or may not be worth the investment.
What they claim
The first thing you want to look out for when considering oral health vitamins is what exactly the vitamins are claiming to do. Remember, there is no magic cure for cavities or gum disease, and vitamins that claim to heal these issues are likely overpromising. The best way to prevent cavities and gum disease is by brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day. Some vitamins also claim to naturally cure bad breath, which is great, however once again the best means to do this is by brushing and flossing.
What they cost
Though these multivitamins contain a lot of different vitamins in one pill, their prices can be a bit steep. In fact, you may be able to get many of the more effective vitamins (such as calcium) in a standalone supplement for a lot less money.
Are they worth it?
Ultimately, it’s up to the consumer to decide whether or not oral health vitamins are worth the investment, however, if you are interested in starting a vitamin regimen, speak to your physician before taking any new vitamins, to make sure that a) the vitamins you are considering are safe to be taken with any medications you may be taking or with any medical conditions you may have, and b) you are taking vitamins that are actually beneficial to your health.
